Paul Wyczawski, an assistant collegiate coach in Kentucky, has been named the new head coach after a three-month search that included more than 100 applicants.

Wyczawski (pronounced WHY-CHOW-SKI) comes from a six-year run of assistant coach at Murray State University and brings with him more than 25 years of coaching experience.

University Athletic Director and head baseball coach James Vilade announced his resignation March 1, effective early June.

Vilade will become the vice president of business and player development for Premier Baseball Academy in Plano, which is owned and operated by Logan Stout, a former player of Vilade’s.

The University’s men’s basketball team solidified its spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament Feb. 26 with a 79-57 victory over Louisiana College on Thursday night.

The Patriots ended their regular season with an 80-74 victory over Mississippi College finishing the season with 15, the most in school history.

Dexter McMarion’s three-point shot two minutes into the game gave the Patriots a 9-6 lead, which they never relinquished.

With the fourth place spot in the American Southwest Conference East Division still up for grabs, the margin for error was down to a minimum as the University’s men’s basketball team took on the University of the Ozarks on Saturday. The Patriots kept their head above water by demolishing the Eagles 94-66 at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The men’s Patriots basketball team defeated LeTourneau 89-73 Saturday to keep their playoff hopes alive despite losing to East Texas Baptist 72-67 in overtime on Thursday.

The Patriots held a 14-8 lead midway through the first half against ETBU. Turnovers plagued minutes eight through four, paving the way for the Tigers to take a 22-19 lead at half time.

DAPHNE, Ala. – The United States Sports Academy named University Athletic Director and head baseball coach James Vilade as their 2010 Alumnus of the Year. Vilade earned a Master’s degree in sports management in 2003 from the USSA.

The University’s men’s basketball team is off to the best start in program history.

The Patriots opened the season with an 87-55 victory over Southwestern Adventist last Monday.

The winning continued Friday and Saturday in the Fred Jacoby I-20 Tip-off Classic at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The Patriots defeated Jarvis Christian 88-76 Friday and Howard Payne 65-58 Saturday.

The Patriots made the first basket and held the lead the remainder of the game against Southwestern Adventist.

A 3-0 victory over the University of the Ozarks on Saturday sent the Patriots to the American Southwest Conference tournament as the #2 seed behind Hardin-Simmons.

The Patriots failed to score in the first half, but did not waste much time in the second. Lauren Thomas scored in the 51st minute on a cross pass from Leah Solomon.

After 90 minutes of no offense, Chelsea Fiscus scored in the first minute of overtime to vault the Patriots to 1-0 victory over LeTourneau in Saturday’s homecoming game.

The Patriots took 21 shots in regulation, 13 in the second half. Only nine of their shots were on goal. LeTourneau managed only one shot the entire game. Fiscus’ only shot hit the back of the net in the 57th second of overtime. It is her first goal of the season.

When some people hit any kind of big mark, the feeling of an “end” comes into mind. As for head volleyball coach Kristee Phelps, hitting the century mark in her career win column only means the beginning of things. Phelps, in her ninth year of coaching and fifth year at the University, managed to capture her 100th win in a match against Mid-America Christian on the final day of the UT Tyler/Trinity Mother Francis Classic that was held a weekend ago.
