University police are preparing for the financial challenges of the next school year by purchasing new equipment and updating some the department already owns.

Much more planning goes into new orientation than most students may realize. The Office of Student Life and Leadership starts preparing in February by setting the dates for the fall semester orientation dates and hiring a set of orientation leaders.
The hiring and planning phases are conducted by the Orientation Planning committee, which consists of three students and two faculty members from Student Life and Leadership.

The Student Government Association members conducted their weekly meeting Thursday with no mention of the disputed president position or the five tied senate seats resulting from last week’s elections.

SGA presidential candidate Rusty Kuciemba filed a formal complaint to the Judicial Review Board on April 16 alleging Sara Khalifa, one of his opponents, received an unfair campaign advantage.

Novelty Relaxation is from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. May 4 in the Sports Café.

Neon Entertainment is providing four massage chairs, four spinal massagers, two foot massagers and an oxygen bar to help University students and faculty

Alpha Chi Omega is bringing Hollywood stars to the University Center Ballroom from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday.

It’s part of this year’s Mr. Alpha Chi pageant, where male University students dress up as their favorite Hollywood characters to compete for a $150 prize.

“Rumor has it there will be characters like Ron Burgandy from “Anchorman,” Maverick from “Top Gun,” McSteamy from “Grey’s Anatomy” and some guys from “Jersey Shore,” president Lisa Baldridge said.

Alpha Chi Omega members are selling tickets for $3. Tickets also can be purchased the night of the show for $5.

Senior Chez Prior won first place at the Big Idea Challenge sponsored by the School of Business Administration.

Charged with envisioning an innovative business idea, twenty-two teams developed their idea into a written business plan and then presented their idea to a panel of judges.

Judges looked at five criteria when deciding the winner; innovation, marketability, how realistic was the idea, if the idea had a high possibility of being funded and presentation.

Senior biology major Brittany Pierce is packing more than memories to take to The University of California-Davis this fall.

Pierce, a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, is the recipient of the 2010 Region II Pryor Fellowship for graduate study.

She received the $1,000 fellowship during Alpha Chi’s first Super-Regional Conference in Little Rock, Ark.

Austin Norville’s performance of an original song earned first place at “Patriot’s Got Talent” on Wednesday night at the University Center Auditorium.

Norville defeated six other contestants, Monique Pasterczyc, Chase Neilson, Jennyfer Keohane, Patriot Talon adviser Vanessa Curry, Joseph Solomon and Brian Stites in the competition sponsored by the Campus Activity Board.

Joseph Solomon took second place for his rendition of Missy Higgin’s “Where I Stood,” and Brian Stites earned third for his performance of an original song.

Students can attend the Beginner-Friendly Mountain Bike rides at 3:30 p.m. every Friday at the Herrington Patriot Center.
The biking routes range from easy to advanced and wind through the 4.5 miles of the University campus.

“The program was inspired to raise awareness of the mountain bike trails that we currently have on our campus and to expose our students to new experiences that they might not have otherwise experienced,” program coordinator Chauncy Deller said.

Deller said students are encouraged to bring their own bikes, but is not required.

Floating in space, childhood curiosity, relationships and holocaust victims proved to be winning themes for this year’s Student Poetry Awards winners.

Laura Ragsdale took first prize for her poem “And Linger and Orbit,” which dealt with the need for humans to connect with each other.

The University’s Robert R. Muntz Library in collaboration with the Poetry Society of Texas presented the eighth annual Student Poetry Awards at Braithwaite Hall last week.

Officials continue searching this month for a new home for dozens of international flags displaced by University Center renovations.

Workers removed about 56 flags more than a year ago from the skylight rafters that served as the UC focus. The flags represent various members of the United Nations and the University’s international student population.

Kyle Horst, a senior journalism major, devoured the competition to win the first Patriot Burger Throwdown contest sponsored by the University’s dining service.

Shannon Mariani, director of dining services, said Horst’s winning burger creation is planned to appear on the menu at the Grille Works some time this week.

Students entered their Patriot-burger recipes either by e-mail or online survey.

Reggaeton and Salsa are some of the dances featured at “Latin Night” organized by the Latin American Student Organization.

Five undergraduates in business class decided six months ago the University needed an organization to promote Latin American culture and provide opportunities for students to socialize.

Ursula Diaz, Carlos Hernandez, Blanca Espinoza and David Garcia are the founding members of the Latin American Student Organization.

Higher One plus P2 represents an equation University business officials hope students equate with easier transactions.

By next fall students can expect to carry a card that combines the qualities of Higher One or the Swoop card and the P2 card. Students now receive refunds on their Higher One card and put Patriot Bucks and Dining Dollars on their P2.

The University plans to hold Family Service and Fun Day so students and their loved ones can reconnect and spend time together.

The event is scheduled for April 10 and includes a series of activities that families can enjoy together.

A morning service project is planned for 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the offices of People Attempting To Help (PATH), 402 W. Front St.

A tailgate party is set for noon at the University’s Irwin Ballpark, followed by a 1 p.m. baseball game, featuring the Patriots against Louisiana College.
